What is the breakdown voltage ?

The breakdown voltage is the maximum voltage that an insulating material can withstand before undergoing an electrical breakdown. This value is a crucial indicator of the insulating capacity of a material and helps ensure the safety of electrical installations.

Breakdown voltage test and measurement

Breakdown voltage tests are essential for several reasons:

• Safety: They ensure that the insulating materials used in electrical installations meet current safety requirements and can withstand the expected operating voltages.
• Performance: They help identify potential insulation defects that could compromise the proper functioning of equipment and lead to breakdowns or short circuits.
• Preventive maintenance: By monitoring the breakdown voltage over time, it is possible to detect the aging of insulating materials and schedule their replacement before a failure occurs.

Our design office performs the breakdown voltage test using a dielectric strength tester (hipot). This device applies an increasing voltage to the sample of insulating material until electrical breakdown occurs. We then record the breakdown voltage and compare it to the reference values ​​for the material in question.

We also measure the electrical current, which allows us to determine the impedance.
