Heavy metals are sometimes essential in industrial processes. They can also come from natural materials necessary for a process. Despite this, most of these heavy elements pose a health hazard.
Thus, heavy metals are subject to strict regulations, particularly in industrial sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food, consumer goods and cosmetics (ICH Q3D, ISO, USP233, Pharmacopoeia, California Proposition 65, etc.).
It is therefore necessary to reduce their presence as much as possible, by substituting these materials or by treating their presence using processes allowing them to be isolated.
Control and verify the presence of heavy metals in the laboratory
Our laboratory, which specializes in chemical analysis and elemental dosage, supports manufacturers in controlling the content and analyzing the presence of heavy metals such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As ), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), osmium (Os) and antimony (Sb).
Often in trace amounts in finished products or raw materials, the quantities to be dosed are very low (in the order of ppm or even less). The material to be analyzed therefore requires specific preparation.
Our teams carry out the determination of heavy metals thanks to our state-of-the-art analytical equipment using ICP-AES or ICP-MS, a classic method recommended in the standards for elemental analysis allowing the quantification of impurities at the trace state.
Other elements such as mercury can be the subject of specific analyzers. Our experience allows us to adapt the best approach depending on the product (mineralization, leaching, microwaves, etc.).
