Ingress Protection testing (IP)

essais étanchéité

The 6NAPSE Group carries out sealing tests on products, materials or coatings according to the protection index (IP).

Ingress Protection testing (IP code)

IP testing classifies products based on their resistance to foreign object intrusion or liquid/water or dust ingress. The results obtained then determine the degree of protection of the system tested according to the degradations observed which would impact operation and safety (accumulation of water or dust).

The qualification of products by IP tests gives the keys to the approval of equipment and their placing on the national or international market (CE marking, export, etc.).

*IPXX: two numbers identify the level of waterproofness of the product. The first number represents the level of protection against solid object penetration (0 to 6). The second corresponds to that of protection against water penetration (0 to 9). If no requirement is specified, the letter X replaces the corresponding number.

Ingress Protection IP

  • Rain tightness test – IPX2-3
  • Water splash test (Shower) – IPX4
  • Spray test (cold splash water test – Karcher) – IPX4K
  • Spray test with standard lance – IPX5-6-6K
  • Immersion test (Ice submersion test) – IPX7-8
  • Karcher test (High pressure wash test) – IPX9K
  • Dust test (Dust proof test) – IP5K-6K

Few examples :

  • IP67: completely dustproof and waterproof against temporary immersion at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes
  • IPX9K: protected against high pressure water jets
  • IP68: completely dustproof and protected against prolonged immersion
  • IP5X: protected against dust
  • IPX6: protected against water jets from all directions

Application cases

  • Checking the behavior of coatings and materials
  • Verification of functional tightness
  • Observation of aging under environmental constraints

Information about our IP tests

  • Dimensions possible today up to 2 meters and 800kg (larger or heavier possible on request)
  • Operation of the product possible: glycol, compressed air, electric, etc.
  • Possible synchronization of the control of the test means with the product operation (for example: synchronization of the spraying with the electrical start-up of the product)
  • Possible waters:
    • Clear water, salt water, sandy water
    • Ambient (temperate) or chilled water
    • Dye possible in all our waters, and different dyes if chained tests
    • These remarks are valid for all the tests
  • Functional follow-up during the test
  • Material and surface analysis

Standards according to customer method
