Black mass analysis – batteries

analyse et caractérisation de la black mass issue du recyclage des batteries lithium-ion

The 6NAPSE Group laboratories support manufacturers in the analysis of black mass resulting from the recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

What is Black Mass ?

Black mass is a byproduct of lithium-ion battery recycling. This fine, dense powder is made up of a complex mixture of precious metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. These elements, essential for the manufacture of new batteries, make black mass a strategic resource for the industry.

Why analyze black mass?

  • Quality assessment: Determine the exact concentration of each element present in black mass and optimize recycling processes to ensure the quality of recycled materials.
  • Process optimization: Adapt extraction and refining processes to maximize yield and reduce costs.
  • Regulatory compliance: Verify that black mass meets the standards and regulations governing battery waste management.

Black mass analysis in laboratory

Chemical Composition of Black Mass

The 6NAPSE Group laboratories offer precise quantification of the desired element content in “black mass” recovered from used batteries. This material is composed of a complex mixture of different materials (precious metals, alloying elements, inorganic compounds, contaminants). The exact composition of black mass varies depending on the chemistry of the original battery and the recycling process used.

We use ICP chemical analysis for a precise and reliable analysis of its elemental composition and to determine the content of key elements that can then be recycled. Indeed, recycling this complex material allows us to recover the precious metals and other valuable materials it contains.

Analysis of powders from recycling to verify process effectiveness

After the recycling process, our expert laboratory characterizes the resulting powders to guarantee their purity and verify the effectiveness of the treatment.

This step includes the precise measurement of the elements to ensure the traceability and quality of the recycled materials. The analytical expertise of our laboratories guarantees the elemental characterization of lithium-ion batteries at each stage of their production.

Pre-manufacturing recyclability analysis

  • During the battery exploration and development phase, we analyze the various components, such as the electrodes and electrolyte, to ensure their inorganic composition and detect any impurities.
  • Prior to manufacturing, we quantify the main elements present in the raw materials and verify the absence of inorganic impurities.
  • Once the battery is assembled, the laboratory analyzes its individual components (anode, cathode, electrolyte) to determine their precise composition.
