Microscopy analysis for materials characterization

The 6NAPSE Group does microscopy analysis of all types of materials and calibrated dimensional measurements in order to observe, analyze, assess or control parts.

Macroscopic and microscopic study of samples in laboratory

Knowledge of the morphology and sizing of parts, surface layers, paints, granules, etc. is essential for mastering an industrial process. It is therefore important to know or control these different parameters in order to validate the methods and processes.

The laboratory is able to characterize any type of morphology and various associated parameters (size, roughness, etc.):

  • Microscopic observations of the morphology of powder or materials,
  • Macroscopic and microscopic dimensional measurements on the surface and in section,
  • Observation of the microstructure and Measurement of the grain size,
  • Characterization of an appearance defect (bump or hollow, size, morphology),
  • Surface condition and Roughness (Ra, Rt, Rq, etc.) by non-contact surface topography,
  • Characterization of the size of particles, powders or in a liquid,

The 6NAPSE group has many technical means allowing analysis, observation, expertise, sizing,… in real colors by different techniques:

  • High Resolution Optical Microscopy
  • Stereomicroscopy
  • Binoculars
  • Inverted Stage Optical Microscope

These different techniques allow us to approach all types of materials, metallic, mineral (glass and others), organic (polymers and plastics, chemicals, etc.). This is often observation in the preamble to carrying out analyzes by scanning electron microscopy or analyzes by infrared spectrometry coupled with microscopy.

For example, our laboratories are able to characterize core metals:

The characterization of microstructures is an essential step in understanding failure phenomena. The multitude of existing metal alloys now requires tools adapted to the characterization of the different grades and the comparison to the many current standards.

The laboratory has equipped itself with an inverted stage microscope, associating it with the latest version of the LEICA characterization software in order to complete its analyzes within the framework of failure expertise on metallic materials and quality control.

The measurement of grain sizes, the observation of hardening phenomena or the characterization of intermetallic layers are examples of applications now carried out on this equipment.
