Fractographic analysis

expertise fractographique rupture casse fissure laboratoire

The 6NAPSE Group carries out the fractographic analysis of products and materials that have undergone a rupture. The laboratory locates and identifies the nature and origin of the failure.

A defect in appearance, deformation, cracking or breakage of a material, part or structure can have many economic consequences for an industrialist.

In order to analyze a break or explain the origin of a break on any type of material (polymers, ceramics, metals, glasses), the 6NAPSE Group supports manufacturers in their fractography analysis.

This analysis makes it possible to locate and identify the nature and origin of the failure in order to put in place corrective actions.

Fractographic analysis in Laboratory

Our laboratories carry out a complete investigation using state-of-the-art equipment. Our experience brings you a precise analysis of the causes of the break, the identification of the origin of the defect or the breakage and support for the resolution of the failure.

  • Validation of the compliance of the material with the expected specifications and the constraints of the context by carrying out chemical analyses, mechanical tests and characterization of the microstructure.
  • Observation of a rupture under microscopy in order to determine the type of breakage (ductile, fragile, following an impact, by fatigue, by material non-compliance, intergranular, intra-granular, following the presence of inclusions, by H2 embrittlement , …).
  • Diagnosis of the origin of the rupture and solutions.

The analysis of a rupture essentially begins with a macroscopic observation. This morphological analysis makes it possible to identify the rupture zone with the naked eye.

In order to carefully examine the rupture zone, a microscopic observation (micro fractographic analysis) is necessary in the second place. Thus, our team is equipped with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the morphology and elemental composition of a solid object. The latter can be supplemented by observation by high-resolution microscopy and microhardness in order to refine the identification and increase the relevance of the conclusions on the nature and origin of the break.

The 6NAPSE Group analyzes all types of failures thanks to its materials laboratory expertise (corrosion, alteration, wear, blistering, mechanical defect, sealing, etc.)
