Layer thickness measurement
The 6NAPSE Group offers the measurement and characterization of product layer thickness in the laboratory.
The measurement of the thickness of layers consists of the physico-chemical characterization of a material applied in low thickness on a substrate. Thus, this measurement makes it possible to control the quality of the application of the layer. In different contexts, this method leads to identify and understand the origin of the appearance of a defect.
Why do a layer thickness measurement?
The purpose of this measure is to enable manufacturers to:
- Check the thickness and nature of the layers to verify compliance or better understand the origin of a failure.
- Check the good adhesion (no porosity, cracks, detachment between the substrate and the thin layer…)
- Control the interaction with the external environment or with the substrate (phenomenon of diffusions for example)

- Non-destructive methods: in this method, there will be no cutting of the sample (non-contact measurement by eddy current, tomographic measurement…)
- Destructive methods: in this method, there will be the cutting of the sample in the first step which is the preparation (cutting, embedding, polishing). This step is followed by observation with SEM-EDX or optical microscopy for the dimensioning and chemical characterization of the sample.
When the coatings are very thin, our experts can also work with profilometric methods (GD-OES, MET outsourced).
