Durometers: measurement of the hardness of materials

The 6NAPSE Group laboratories are equipped for the measurement of hardness, micro-hardness and nano-indentation: Vickers, Knoop, Brinell, Rockwell, Shore

Test the hardness of all types of materials in the laboratory

Hardness testing is the measurement or verification of the strength of a coating or surface.

The 6NAPSE GROUP has the necessary equipment for the analysis of all types of materials according to the standards in force (eg ISO6507). The means allow a multitude of choices of imprints, the possibility of working in microhardness or nanoindentation, and even to produce hardness maps to understand the behavior of a material.

The hardness measurement makes it possible to obtain analysis zones and reduced and very localized penetration depths. In addition, it allows the identification of intrinsic mechanical characteristics such as Young’s modulus.

Our laboratories are also organized to carry out measurements on short notice or in an emergency (24h, 48h or 72h).

Hardness measurements can be carried out on the surface, in the core and in filiation after preparation by micrographic section.

These measurements make it possible, among other things, to:

  • Confirm the validity of a material batch
  • Validate the choice of a heat treatment
  • Diagnose the mechanical behavior of a material

Features of our durometers

  • Microhardness
    • Vickers STRUERS Duramin-1 Microhardness Tester
    • Nine types of load, ranging from 98.07mN (10 grams) to 19.61N (2 kilograms), a Vickers hardness of HV0.01 to HV2.
  • Macrohardness
    • Vickers Durometer
    • Shore Durometer
    • Rockwell Durometer
    • Brinell Durometer
  • Nano-indentation
    • Tip types (Bercovitch, Vickers)
    • Measurement modes (standard, sine mode, hardness matrix)

Method

The pyramidal imprint left by the indenter in the sample will make it possible to determine the hardness of the sample. This imprint has a lateral surface S.
